My first butterfly spotting of the year! I was fortunate to observe this green Comma Butterfly while it stretched and acclimated to its newly formed wings. Much of this process occurred on the top of a vacant bee hive in our yard.
The butterfly remained for quite some time. The colors in its wings increasingly accentuated and made more brilliant by the low, late afternoon setting sun.
The small, white “comma” shape on the lower section of the underside of the wing explains the comma part of this butterfly’s name. Greenish cast to parts of the border of the underwing are obscured by the bright illumination of the wing. However, they are the components of this insect’s name- Green Comma.
It may be a bit anthropomorphic, but I like to discover the symbolism attached to events like the first sighting of a butterfly in the Spring. This what I learned about the meaning of orange butterflies:
- Orange butterflies are symbols of encouragement, excitement, and passion. Seeing an orange butterfly is a call to stay positive, to reconnect with joy and follow your inner bliss and excitement to positively transform your life experience. (multiple websites)
Keep your eye out for your first butterfly of the year…
- Nature’s message was always there and for us to see. It was written on the wings of butterflies. ( Kjell B. Sandved )
