We are thrilled to announce the Winners of the 2023 ScreenCraft Horror Competition. These exceptional horror projects were selected from almost 1,700 submissions. Congratulations!

Overall Winner

Agua de tu Madre by Naiyah Ambros

Agua de tu Madre is a supernatural folktale of diaspora, generational inheritance, and resilience that centers on Zamira, a pregnant woman who struggles to find financial - and personal - stability while dealing with racism in the Cuban-American community along with the encroaching influence of the Santeria sea goddess, Yemayá.

Feature Winner

The House of Saints by Sandy Nicholson

An elderly man and his young granddaughter spend the weekend together in his isolated caravan – but while their relationship seems loving, each of them is hiding a sinister agenda that will bring them face-to-face with ancient evil beings that make their home out on the Northern English moors.

TV Winner

The Hole in the Woods by Rachel Greenhoe

20 years ago, 12-year-old Maggie disappeared while looking for fairies in the Vermont woods; now the only witnesses, her two cousins, struggle with the physical and emotional ramifications of their role in true crime history, especially now that it looks like history might repeat itself.

Add-on Prize Winners

Selected by Greg Newman

DeadMe by Asabi Lee and Paul Hart-Wilden

Aimless and down-on-her-luck Ash, inadvertently finds herself caught in the world's most secretive and deadly game, where absolutely anyone - at any moment- could be the death of her and the only way out is to kill or be killed in this ultimate game of survival.

Selected by Jim Klock

Strange Flesh by Devin Fearn

In the winter of 1917, an aging alcoholic Sheriff of a Native American town must overcome his haunted past, in order to save a young girl who's been abducted by a supernatural Native legend as it terrorizes the countryside.

We are excited to announce the Winners of the 2022 ScreenCraft Comedy Competition. These exceptional scripts were selected from almost 2,000 submissions. A huge congratulations to this year's winners!

Overall Winner

Black Mormon by Rory Kulz, Eric Stroud

When a repressed, mixed-race Mormon is promoted to head the Church’s Black outreach, his racial awakening provokes him to live without inhibition, fraying his relationships with his family, his work, and his God.

Feature Winner

Hillbilly Bath by Lauren Kleeman

After her boyfriend dumps her, a trailer trash sexagenarian joins the county fair beauty pageant in an attempt to win him back, along the way inspiring other older women to compete, creating her own definition of beauty, and discovering self love.

Pilot Winner

Tapped by Sarah Martellaro

A dysfunctional couple vacations to Vermont in an attempt to save their relationship but becomes entwined in the dangerous French-Canadian maple syrup cartel.

Mentorship Prize Winner (with 3Arts manager)

Mr. Shaky-Choky by Danny Galvin & Brad Pike

Mr. Shaky-Choky, the thing that goes bump in the night, is arrested and sent to prison for 40 years. Upon his release, he struggles to adapt to a world where spooks no longer spook - until he finds himself at the centers of a missing persons case that forces him to confront monsters from the other side of the law.

Honorable Mention

Crips by Brian Koukol

When a disabled man discovers that his long-time girlfriend and caregiver has been cheating on him, he must decide where to draw the line in this comedic tale of life, love, and progressive neuromuscular disease set in the un-accommodating world of suburban Los Angeles.

We'd like to thank again our esteemed jury that included: Justin Lee of Lord Miller Productions, Emma Broughton the Head of Scripted TV at New Regency, Bre Andrade the Creative Executive at Party Over Here, and Grey Cusack the former Director of Development at Columbia Pictures.

It was a big year for SXSW, the prestigious Austin-based film festival that returned to an in-person jamboree after two years of virtual screenings and online events.

Part of the big media buzz this year included the premiere of several studio titles, like the Nicolas Cage spy-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, along with the Sandra Bullock adventure rom-com, The Lost City.

As exciting as big-budget movies can be with the glitz and glam of their stars in attendance, SXSW is mostly revered in the film community for its focus on independent films.

Always looking to honor the best and brightest indie filmmakers, we're over the moon to highlight four current and former ScreenCraft winners and finalists that had projects premiere at the festival, two of which taking home the win in their respective categories.

Let's take a closer look at these talented creatives and the work that took SXSW 2022 by storm!

I Love My Dad

'I Love My Dad' (Photo Credit: SXSW)

I Love My Dad | James Morosini (Writer/Director)

SXSW Narrative Feature Competition Winner
2020 ScreenCraft Comedy Screenplay Competition Winner

Synopsis

Inspired by Writer/Director/Star James Morosini’s true-life experience, I Love My Dad follows Chuck (Patton Oswalt), an estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his depressive son, Franklin (Morosini). Blocked on social media and concerned for his son’s life, Chuck impersonates a waitress (Claudia Sulewski) online and starts checking in with Franklin. But things begin to spiral when Franklin falls for this imaginary girl and wants nothing more than to meet her in person, as Chuck has inadvertently catfished his own son.

About the Filmmaker

After graduating from USC's School of Cinematic Arts, James Morosini decided to pursue a career as an actor, appearing on such shows as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and The Sex Lives of College Girls. But sometimes life throws such strange events at you, you have to make a film about them. Getting catfished by his dad during a time when Morosini was dealing with a bout of severe depression is one of those events. But Morosini says he isn’t afraid to go deep into the difficult parts of life. Morosini told The Daily Beast:

“I believe everything I do creatively should force me to grow in some way or another, or make me uncomfortable in one way or another. This was the most uncomfortable thing I could write about.”

Morosini’s script for I Love My Dad won the 2020 ScreenCraft Comedy Screenplay Competition. Congrats to James and his dad!

Moshari

Moshari | Nuhash Humayun (Writer/Director)

SXSW Midnight Shorts Winner | SXSW World Premiere
2022 ScreenCraft Film Fund Finalist

Synopsis

Moshari is a traditional South Asian mosquito net, made for protection against vermin at night. When the world is overrun with bloodthirsty creatures, the last of mankind persevere in Dhaka, Bangladesh by spending their nights inside the moshari - the only known shelter from the unknown threat.

Two sisters, Apu and Ayra, must navigate this strange new world to survive. However, their strained relationship is becoming as much of a threat as the dangers outside. One night, when Ayra’s curiosity lures her outside the safety of the moshari, Apu must rise to the occasion - as they face their demons, together.

About the Filmmaker

Bangladesh-based writer/director, Nuhash Humayun, is a 2022 ScreenCraft Film Fund Finalist for his feature screenplay Moving Bangladesh about a struggling middle-class Bangladeshi entrepreneur who creates a motorcycle travel app that may change transport in developing countries forever. Humayun loves mashing up film genres with South-Asian influences.

Humayan recently said in a Prothom Alo interview that his inspiration for telling stories on film came from a surprising yet loving figure in his life:

“My mother is my only inspiration for my cinema. She bought me a camera when I was 12 or 13. My mom thought I would use it as a hobby. Later, when she saw me making a short film, she allowed me to shoot at home. Mother never allowed father to do so! Mom was always with me during this journey. Father was too, but Mother gave me the support.”

A Woman on the Outside

'A Woman on the Outside' (Photo Credit: SXSW)

A Woman on the Outside | Kiara Jones (Producer)

SXSW Feature Documentary World Premiere
2021 ScreenCraft Film Fund Winner

Synopsis

Growing up, Kristal watched nearly every man in her life disappear to prison. She channeled that struggle into keeping families connected, both as a social worker and with her van service that drives families to visit loved ones in far-off prisons. But when Kristal’s dad and brother return to Philly, her happiness meets the realization that release doesn't always mean freedom. Passionate, funny, and resilient, Kristal remains determined to carve out a different future -- for herself and for her young nephew, Nyvae.

Part observational documentary, part family album, A Woman on the Outside is a tender portrait of one family striving to love in the face of a system built to break them.

About the Filmmaker

Kiara Jones is a director, writer, and producer based in New York who enjoys championing diverse stories and creating sustainable financial models for independent filmmakers.

Jones won the 2021 ScreenCraft Film Fund, saying:

“Screenwriting can be a long dark journey, ScreenCraft has been a source of light providing inspiration, helping me to set new goals, and providing much-needed monetary support through their grant program. ScreenCraft promoted my project and helped me to share my work with agencies, technicians, and film supporters to broaden my network of collaborators.”

Linoleum

'Linoleum' (Photo Credit: SXSW)

Linoleum | Colin West (Writer/Director)

SXSW Narrative Feature World Premiere
2019 ScreenCraft Sci-Fi & Fantasy Screenplay Competition Finalist
2019 ScreenCraft Film Fund Winner

Synopsis

When a satellite falls from orbit and crashes into the suburban home of a dysfunctional family in Ohio, the father seizes the opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut by re-building it into his own rocket ship. While his wife and daughter believe he's experiencing a midlife crisis, surreal events begin to unfold around him, forcing him to reconsider how interconnected their lives truly are...

About the Filmmaker

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Colin West studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and enjoys exploring themes of family and nostalgia in his films, saying in an interview with The Invention of Dreams:

“I think I’ve always been a nostalgic person. I’m always looking back. I’m looking forward too, and I have aspirations looking forward. But man, do I love going to places I went as a kid. Going back to the library I used to go to or the park. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in so I can go to my room. I find a certain amount of joy in that. I think as far as this sort of aspiration aspect and measuring success aspect and being ok with where you are now… it does come down to that. You can live in your own dream state reality, but it’s important to consider how your younger self might consider you now. My younger self would be like, ‘Man! You made a movie! That’s cool! Good job!’ Part of it is imagining what it would be like to talk to your younger self and learning from your future self. It’s all threaded into the movie.”

West was a finalist in the 2019 ScreenCraft Sci-Fi Screenplay Competition for his script Linoleum and recipient of the 2019 ScreenCraft Film Fund for his film Linoleum

Entering a screenwriting competition can feel like taking a shot in the dark. Filmmaker Kaylon Hunt is here to shed some light.

Raise your hand if this is you: You spend months crafting a screenplay, staying up late, waking up early, whisking those fingers over your keyboard like a souped up writing machine, and once it's done, you decide to enter your work into a screenwriting contest. The problem is that you're not quite sure how it's going to be received by the judges. In fact, you really have no idea what they're looking for other than "a good screenplay," which, let's be real, is an entirely subjective standard and difficult to prepare for.

Now that everyone's hands are raised, let's all agree that, yeah, entering these contests can feel like a bit of a gamble, so we wanted to ask someone on the other side of the submit button about what screenwriters can expect.

We asked Kaylon Hunt, Vice President of Development and Production at Viola Davis’ JuVee Productions and True Story & Public Domain Competition judge, what he looks for in screenplays, common mistakes he sees beginners make, as well as what writers can do to increase their chances of winning.

---

ScreenCraft: As a producer and creative, what do you look for in screenplays?

Kaylon Hunt: I look for authenticity, originality, and heart. I try to keep simplicity in mind when I read material too. Does the story track and are the character arcs clear? Yes it can be a big story, but if it’s too complicated and not anchored in character, you might lose me. Another thing I gauge is if the writer’s voice is shining through, in the sense that there’s a personal connection to the story and they’re not just trying to emulate something.

SC: As a judge for the True Story & Public Domain Competition, what excites you most about the “inspired by” or “based on a true story” stories?

KH: They’re a great opportunity to bring to light societal issues and how they affect real, everyday, often unheard people – either through character study, theme, or a combination of both. They also allow us to reflect more directly on our own parts within these systems, whether it relates to economic disparity, or social or domestic injustice. Other genres can do this too, of course, but real stories add another layer of empathy and insight into another’s experience that isn’t sensationalized.

SC: What are some of the most common beginner mistakes that keep a script from winning a competition?

KH: I think peer review is so important. Getting other eyes on your script before submitting can help you address any glaring issues that would hinder a reader from understanding the writer’s intent or vision on the page.

SC: With many Oscar nominations being true stories and adaptations, do you have any tips for writers who want to bring a story from the public domain to life on screen?

KH: I’d say find a way into the story that’s unique to you and your experiences. Have a point of view and don’t be afraid to make bold choices.

SC: There are plenty of mistakes a screenwriter can make that reduce their chances of winning a competition... but great scripts lose, too. What are some things that writers can’t control but should be aware of when competing?

KH: You can’t control how other people read your material or how they might filter their opinion through their own preferences and experiences. The outcome doesn’t always correlate to the quality of the writing or talent of the writer.

SC: How big of a role do trends play in the success of a script? Should screenwriters stay on top of them?

KH: Yes, trends can have a role in how scripts circulate or how often they might get read -- for instance, if a studio, producer, or actor is looking for a particular kind of project. My opinion is that “trends” can be hard to chase. So, if anything, I always recommend writers write what they are passionate about. If a trend intersects with your personal interests, then go for it. Like I said in a prior question, find a way into it that is personal to you.

SC: There are plenty of great screenwriters out there who enter contests and consistently place in the semifinals or even the finals but haven’t won yet. What advice would you give to help them make it over that final hurdle?

KH: Keep writing! Your craft will improve, your network and community will grow, and opportunities will increase. While it is a competition, there’s also value in the experience of entering and seeing how your material resonates, especially if it places in the finals and semifinals. Your name gets out there and more people become familiar with your work. Apply every year if you want. But don’t let not winning stop you.

Pitching your screenplay to a room full of professional writers, agents, producers, and studio execs can be nerve-wracking. There's a lot to consider when you craft the pitch for your script. How long should you talk? What questions should you be ready to answer? Should you summarize the plot of your screenplay or focus on the themes? What about character descriptions? Should you "spoil" the ending or keep your listeners in suspense? Pitch meetings are usually short (often less than 15 minutes) so you have to know how to pitch like a pro if you want to option your script.

Learning how to pitch your script like a pro is tough because you really have to experience what it's like to be in a pitch meeting to really know what to expect. Until now. We're thrilled to bring you our first ever LIVE Virtual Pitch Grand Finale event where ten top writers will pitch to our ScreenCraft Virtual Pitch judges live and streaming for all of you to see. Learn from professional pitches and take notes on the feedback and input from these talented writers and judges. If you ever wanted to know what it's like to pitch your script, this is the event for you.

Watch all 10 pitches here (the pitches start around the 4:00 mark).

Meet the 10 ScreenCraft Virtual Pitch Finalists

Watch these emerging screenwriters pitch to industry pros to learn how to pitch like a pro at your next script meeting. Here are the ten talented finalists that will be pitching their screenplays live for all of you to see!

Joshua Young — SOAKED

virtual pitch finalsRaised by a psychic and a carpenter (that's actually true), Joshua's humble beginning in the entertainment industry was as a horse in a community Christmas play. Today, after twenty years in the film industry, he's pushing his work as a screenwriter and director full-time with the eventual goal of becoming a Showrunner and Head Writer of his own series. Joshua spent six years working in a variety of positions for a cruise line, which is the inspiration for his TV series, SOAKED.

How he prepares for pitch meetings

“There's an old saying in the sciences where if you can't explain your scientific theory to a non-scientist, you don't truly understand the theory yourself. I feel the same could be said for pitching as a writer, as it teaches you what key elements and "hooks" make your story what it is.”

Say congrats to Joshua on Twitter @JoshuaYoung9.

Richard Scott — A-POP

virtual pitch finalsOriginally from Maryland where he worked in politics and government, Richard stopped writing campaign speeches to move to LA to write for TV. At 17, he was in a boy band competition, where he met Lou Pearlman and got words of wisdom from Aaron Carter. “What if I were the leader of a K-pop group, and how would an American K-pop group come together” was Richard’s inspiration for A-POP!

“Pitching is the second-most important thing for a writer, other than writing itself, in my opinion."

How he prepares for pitch meetings

"To connect, you have to understand yourself, understand who you're speaking with, understand why you connect with and should tell the story you're pitching, and finding a way to connect with the person you're pitching to. Pitches change based on the time and who you're pitching to, but ultimately, the core of the pitch is who are you, why are you the one to tell this story, and what makes this story so frickin' awesome that it has to be told?”

Kyra Jones — GO TO THE BODY

virtual pitch finalsOriginally from Annapolis, Maryland, and currently based in Chicago, Kyra's inspiration for GO TO THE BODY comes from her work as a professional sexual violence prevention educator and survivor advocate. She wanted to write a story that accurately depicted the experiences of Black survivors and their loved ones.

“You're not just selling your story, you're selling yourself and why you're the best person to tell it."

How she prepares for pitch meetings

"To prepare for a pitch, I write a short summary of my script, then focus on answering the questions "Why Me?" and "Why Now?" I try to be as natural and upbeat as possible during the pitch, and make sure my personality and passion shine through.”

Congratulate Kyra on Twitter @blkassfeminist.

Elisa Eliot — THE DREAM MACHINE

virtual pitch finalsBorn in New York and currently living in Los Angeles. THE DREAM MACHINE, though whimsical and magical is autobiographical. According to Elisa both actual dreams and the dreams we have for our own lives and our world – are more important than ever, and she wanted to inspire children everywhere to keep dreaming no matter what obstacles and challenges lay ahead.

“You can have the best idea ever, but if you can’t present that in front of an audience in a compelling, engaging and exciting way no one is going to be interested."

How she prepares for pitch meetings

"I usually script my pitch, then edit the heck out of it, then read it many times over… then throw it away and speak from the heart haha! It may seem like a lot of work just to throw it away at the end, but by doing all of the prep work I feel that the really important stuff gets internalized while not hindering you from being real and spontaneous in the moment.”

Congratulate Elisa on Twitter: @elisaeliot

Stef Smith — NEXT DIMENSION VIDEO

virtual pitch finalsOriginally from Wagga Wagga, and now living with her family in Sydney, Australia. Stef’s inspiration for NEXT DIMENSION VIDEO is her love for big, action-packed, ‘splosion filled, blockbuster movies growing up, and the comfort in being able to disappear into a movie! She wanted to create a show to express her love of the comedy sci-fi genre specifically - and to try to address the imbalance of leading women in the genre.

How she prepares for pitch meetings

“Oh gosh, pitching is SO important, though as a little Aussie writer the opportunity is also super rare. In terms of prep for the pitch itself - I come from a performance background, but I’m also pretty incapable of not being myself, so I try to be a mix of SUPER PREPARED (thanks anxiety) and also just very myself (accidental swears and all).”

Collette Legault — HEAVY

virtual pitch finalsOriginally from a wicked cool town in the Northeast and now lives in Los Angeles. The inspiration for HEAVY is her lifelong friend, who’s black, five-hundred-pound stepdad, Heavy, made him and his brother feel safe, happy, and protected.

“Every movie or television show idea starts with a pitch."

How she prepares for pitch meetings

"It’s important to be able to sell your story orally through pitching ideas in concise and exciting ways. If you can convey your voice and stir emotions through your pitch, there’s a good chance they’ll want to read your script.”

Congratulate Collette on Twitter @collettels

Wesley MacInnes — BLACKOUT

virtual pitch finalsBorn in Calgary, Alberta, and currently residing in Vancouver, Canada, Wesley MacInnes has created a dramatic series titled BLACKOUT inspired by his life as an artist in the music industry. From tiny bars playing to no one to sold-out arenas touring with Shania Twain among others, BLACKOUT is a deep dive into the underbelly of the industry: the meteoric highs, crushing lows, abuse, addiction, sexism, racism, and the unseen true to life reality of what really happens behind the curtain.

“Pitching is essential, in that it is the nexus between the creative and the business world, and you have to be able to pitch in order to take a great idea and make it into something real and tangible."

How he prepares for pitch meetings

"I prepare for a pitch by trying to zoom out as far as possible from the core of my project and from there find the most engaging way to invite someone inside, layer by layer, until they reach that core themself.”

Congratulate Wesley on Twitter @WesMackMusic.

Lizzie Perrin — BAKO

virtual pitch finalsBorn in Nagoya, Japan, Lizzie grew up in Canton, Georgia. Her inspiration for BAKO came from her own struggles to embrace her identity as a "Japanese American" writer as someone who was adopted and grew up in white, Southern culture. BAKO is her window to dive into Japanese culture through her character's eyes.

“Pitching is essential for a writer because it forces her to understand the core of the story, themes, and how it relates to others, which are the building blocks of storytelling itself."

How she prepares for pitch meetings

I prepare for pitching my reminding myself why I chose to write the project so I can explain the reason I should tell it and have the appropriate passion and courage. I then boil down the project to the most vital story beats and themes, and I rehearse the whole pitch until I feel confident that I can convey it to others in a clear way.”

Congratulate Lizzie on Twitter @LizzayPerrin

Jim Picariello — THE CULT OF US

virtual pitch festivalGrew up in Wellesley Massachusetts and currently lives in rural, coastal Maine. Jim’s inspiration for THE CULT OF US is based on his own experience of being recruited, trapped, and rescued from a Quasi-Buddhist, computer-programming, mind-control cult. It led him to write an informative, accessible, and entertaining story, to clarify the nature of typical cults, the initial red flags cults present during recruitment, and the power they have over their intelligent and creative followers.

“I think the skill of pitching is important, but it needs to feel honest and conversational as if you're not really pitching."

How he prepares for pitch meetings

"As a two-time Austin Film Festival pitch finalist, I typically write out the pitch and record myself saying it, clearly and slowly, and listen to it 100 or more times, eventually speaking along with it, like singing to a song. Then I speed up the playback, to practice at normal speed. My goal is to know the pitch so well, I can change the order and riff on certain parts, based on the level of interest from the listener.”

Congratulate Jim on Twitter @jimpicariello

Vanessa Logan & Nadia Wit — HIS DEAD GIRLFRIEND

virtual pitch finalsvirtual pitch finalsHIS DEAD GIRLFRIEND is a comedy feature from this female writing team based in Los Angeles. Inspired by the notion of a modern upbeat look at love and loss--something to riff on the old classics like My Favorite Wife and what it would look like if the female lead were dead and the man was caught in an other-worldly love triangle.

“As writers, we love working to harness this same excitement in a pitch in a way that conveys the essence, texture, and tone because it is absolutely VITAL to engage and entice the producer (and every other team member along each step of the way) to get them to understand what the audience will love and why they are investing their time and money.

How they prepare for pitch meetings

"When we pitch, we spend around 100 hours on camera rewriting and playing to find the right ways to phrase each section and get it in our bones.”

Congratulate Venessa and Nadia on Twitter @thevanessalogan.

Acclaimed screenwriter and director Emily Carmichael has built a reputation for weaving compelling, action-packed stories and crafting complex action heroes that appeal to a broad audience. Her credits include writing and directing big-budget action projects like Pacific Rim to most recently writing Jurassic World: Dominion. She's also working on the Disney reboot of the 1979 sci-fi film The Black Hole.

In a recent ScreenCraft AMA, Emily spoke with three-time Emmy award-winning producer, director, writer, and cinematographer Kevin Bachar about her writing process, time management techniques, and how she creates blockbuster action movies. You should watch the entire video (it's great). But if you don't have time, here are six of the biggest tips and takeaways from Emily Carmichael's fast-paced AMA on how she approaches writing an action screenplay.

Emily Carmichael is a juror for ScreenCraft's Action & Adventure Screenplay competition.

how to write action script

How to get started as an action screenwriter

Emily got her start as a playwright and director while attending Harvard University and then a film student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her advice for evolving into a high demand action-adventure screenwriter and director is simple — create an outline.

"There's nothing boring about writing with an outline," Emily said. In fact, Emily points out that this key step can help writers avoid problems further into the writing process, and it can speed up the writing phase of the project. Speed and problem-solving are just part of how she's collaborated on Hollywood blockbusters and gained popularity with her short films across the festival circuit.

Emily also stresses that writers need to research their subjects with purpose. Focus on studying subjects and places that will help you move the story forward and create meaningful set points. Lastly, Emily advises new and emerging screenwriters to tailor their writing to specific genres.

"If you want to get into a certain genre, you should make work as close to the genre that you can." Emily points out that she typically avoids genre-blending in order to keep her work clear and focused.

Time management tips for screenwriters

Screenwriting is a job, and that means hitting goals and writing on a schedule. To help manage expectations, combat writer's block, and churn out top-level scripts, Emily recommends these three techniques that help keep screenwriters on target:

 1. Be honest with how much time you want to dedicate to a particular project. It's tempting to say "yes" to every project that comes your way, but being overly accommodating is only going to add complications down the road. Be clear and communicate your capabilities honestly and you'll be off to a much better (if slightly slower) start.
 2. Set reasonable goals. Be realistic with your schedule, so you can make progress with attainable timetables.
 3. Use the Pomodoro technique. “My number one piece of advice is: use the Pomodoro technique,” said Emily. [41:15] This one technique can improve the quality of your writing time and combat writer’s block. Work for a specific interval of time and then take a break. Repeat. Emily also recommends keeping a journal of your workflow.

How to write a compelling story

Emily's advice for action set pieces is both universal and specific. Use set points with intention. Every set piece in your script should propel the story forward. “There is so much that can happen doing set pieces. I just go for it," she adds. "Don’t hold back on your set pieces.”

Emily also encourages screenwriters to be as creative as possible while keeping the stakes high. "When the stakes are life or death, that is a story." Look for ways to add different moods, weather elements, and terrains to scenes to keep audiences interested.

How to pitch your action screenplay

Sadly, writing a great script is only half of the story. To become a successful screenwriter you have to make other people care about your story. And that means mastering pitch meetings.

Screenwriters need to develop skills beyond writing that allow them to effectively explain the essence of their film. Emily implores writers to lead with their passion, and tell the human story of their screenplay—not a summary of the plot. "A pitch is not a summary of the screenplay," Emily warns. Aside from this guiding principle, Emily's advice for pitching your script is all about being prepared and managing expectations:

 1. Be prepared. Emily advises writers to create a document of what you will say during the pitch. Remember to write it in a conversational style
 2. Get to the root of your story. Avoid getting bogged down in too many details or a lengthy summary of the plot
 3. Tell people how your story will end. A pitch meeting is not the time to keep people in suspense. Nobody wants to buy a screenplay without knowing how it's going to end
 4. "Don't be afraid of your excitement," warns Emily. Genuine emotion can help people get excited about you and your screenplay, and according to Emily, enthusiasm and authenticity can be huge assets when it comes time to sell your script.

Action screenwriting success

There's no fast-track to screenwriting success. However, there is a carpool lane. You can increase your odds of gaining attention and interest in your scripts if you follow Emily's three pieces of screenwriting career advice:

 1. Enter contests. Screenwriting contests are a great way to gain experience, get feedback, and grow your body of work.
 2. Build relationships. Part of getting an agent or a paid gig is to form connections until you find people that trust and care about your work. Develop partnerships with screenwriters, directors, and other people in the industry.
 3. Complete your first screenplay. Emily warns against trying to write the perfect script on your first try — because it probably won't happen. “To write something great you will probably have to write a bunch of things that aren’t great.”

Reaching the finish line

According to Emily Carmichael, “A screenplay is done as soon as you can stand to have another person read it.” [56:30] The first step to becoming a successful screenwriter is finishing your script. The second step is getting that script into the hands of people that can do something with it.

If you have a finished action or adventure script that you can stand to have someone else read, now is the time to submit it to the ScreenCraft Action & Adventure Screenplay competition. Take the next step in your screenwriting career and submit to a jury of professional writers, producers, directors, agents, and industry insiders like Emily Carmichael.

]]>
Five months ago, I was sitting at home facing the daunting (and somewhat hopeless) task of figuring out where I wanted to go as an unknown but experienced writer. The problem wasn't a lack of options. It was that there were almost too many screenwriting fellowships and competitions. I didn't know which one to choose. In the end, I did what most writers do. I asked around, Googled top ten screenwriting fellowship lists, and went with my gut.

I applied to the 2020 ScreenCraft Fellowship, and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made in my screenwriting career. Here's how to choose a screenwriting fellowship program, and why (the right) program can change the direction of your writing career.

Luke Hassel is an actor, writer, director who was chosen to be one of three fellows for the 8th Annual ScreenCraft Fellowship Program with his submission, Girls on the Run. Lukas’s screenwriting accolades include: Fresh Voices (winner "Girls on the Run"), Shore Film Fund (winner TV pilot "Galápagos"), Cinestory Fellowship winner (the drama "The Mechanic), Won NYC Horror Film award (the horror screenplay "Silhouette"), twice placed in the top 40 Nicholl's fellowship as well as many other film festival screenplay wins. He is based in New York City where he lives with his husband.

screenwriting fellowships

How to choose a screenwriting fellowship program

One of the reasons I chose the ScreenCraft Fellowship was that I'd seen what they could do. I placed fourth in ScreenCraft’s 2019 Drama competition and I was impressed with the follow-up and genuine interest ScreenCraft had in getting my script (“Halfway”) out there. So I submitted my latest script, a dramedy “Girls on the Run,” crossed my fingers, and hoped that someone would see the potential in a story where the protagonists were three women in their ’80’s with hopes, dreams, and friendships for the ages.

Four months later, against impossible odds, I was named one of three ScreenCraft fellows. Cut to: ScreenCraft Fellowship Week 2020, and holy crap. It's been one heck of a week. Here's what it's like to be a ScreenCraft screenwriting fellow.

What is a screenwriting fellowship actually like?

When the folks at ScreenCraft sent me my schedule of generals (as these casual business meetings are called) I was blown away. I had back-to-back(-to-back!) meetings with top industry people, both on the development executive side and screenwriting side.

If you don’t try, nothing is ever going to happen

As a relative newbie to the business end of screenwriting, these generals were a welcome step in my evolution as a professional writer. But they weren't your standard pitch meeting.

Fellowship Week meetings schedule

It's the first day of fellowship meetings. All my meetings are with L.A. folks (three-hours behind me). Slightly nervous, I sit down for my first general meeting armed with extensive research for each person I was set to meet with. I came prepared with a long list of questions and an iced venti three-pump decaf iced mocha.

My first general is with screenwriter Peter Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians, The Proposal). Peter greets me from his office with a disarming smile and instantly puts me at ease. This is not a job interview, a test, or something to mess up. It's merely two people having a chat about the industry and an incredible opportunity to hear about someone's journey to where they are today.

Next is Eric Fineman, Senior VP at Pascal Pictures. After introducing me to his gorgeous rescue puppy, we discuss my scripts and where to go from here.

On Tuesday, I meet with Academy Award-winning writer David Rabinowitz (BlackkKlansman) shares his incredible journey from tracking down IP on a book he and his writing partner really liked, to walking away with that golden statue five years later. Crystal Holt, Development Exec at AMC (who really needs to get her own show) had me in stitches from her pitch-perfect deadpan comments about how the industry should and shouldn’t work.

And that was just the first two days!

You should apply for Fellowship Week

I could go on and on about the meetings and experiences I've had this week. The point is, I already feel more secure in knowing what's expected of me as a professional writer. After just five days, I have a better understanding of what matters and what doesn’t. That's incredibly valuable at this stage of my career.

I can't help thinking back to that moment five months ago. I'm sitting with my laptop, wondering whether or not the submission fee for the Fellowship program is worth it. After this week, I know one thing for certain. If you don’t try, nothing is ever going to happen.

Submissions are open for the next ScreenCraft Fellowship Week. Get your script into the hands of industry influencers and people who want to help you take the next step in your screenwriting career. Apply today.

We're happy to share some improvements that we've made regarding our process of selecting and announcing placements in ScreenCraft's competitions. The main change to our process is that we will be announcing top 50 finalists ahead of our winners announcements. We've added this step for two reasons: 1) we want to celebrate and recognize the many stellar projects that come through our programs, and 2) we think it's important to show that how our internal evaluation process works. It's admittedly a very subjective process to evaluate screenplays, which are nuanced and complex form of art. We recognize the importance of qualified, experienced readers and judges, which is why the quality of our readers and industry judges is our top priority. Here's how ScreenCraft's writing competitions work:

Each round of reads takes roughly four weeks.

ScreenCraft competitions receive hundreds, and in some cases, thousands, of submissions from writers around the world. Each submission for each competition is carefully read and scored by one of our readers with a 10-point score card and a few sentences of their thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of the script. All ScreenCraft readers have at least a year of professional experience reading for either an agency, studio, production company, or literary management company, and we are very selective about whom we hire to read for us.

Quarterfinalists

Once all submissions have been read for the first round, we advance the top 25% to the quarterfinalist round.

Semifinalists

The semifinalists are determined as follows: the submissions that place as quarterfinalists are read a second time by a new ScreenCraft judge with no knowledge of how the entry was scored in the first round. We then calculate a weighted average of the two scores, with a stronger emphasis placed on the higher score and advance the top 10% to the next round.

Finalists

Based on the previous two rounds of evaluations, we'll select the top 50 projects as our finalists.

Winners and Top 10

At this point, the ScreenCraft team will closely review the remaining projects and writers before narrowing to a top 10 and eventually top 5. The top five scripts will be presented to our industry jury, who will select three and rank them according to their preference until a winner and runner up are determined. We then announce our winner, runner-up, honorable mentions and top 10 finalists.

We're excited to announce the dates of our 2016 screenplay contests. Mark your calendars for these dates, and be sure to sign up for email notifications here.

In case you missed it, here are over 87 emails from happy screenwriters who appreciated ScreenCraft contest screenplay feedback from our professional Hollywood readers.

ScreenCraft's screenwriting competitions celebrate screenplays by genre and format. We eliminate any potential genre bias from readers by tailoring our prize packages and Hollywood juries to the genre and format. May the best screenplays win!

"ScreenCraft catapulted my career years ahead of even my most optimistic expectations. The contacts and — perhaps even more importantly — the legitimacy the fellowship gave me has helped me land top tier representation and put me in a position to pitch projects to major studios." - Robert Haffey, ScreenCraft Fellowship winner

"Placing 2nd in the Screencraft Action/Thriller Contest directly led to me getting signed with one of the top management companies in Hollywood. I’m going out of a ton of meetings and now have multiple projects in development. I cannot thank John, Cameron, and the rest of the Screencraft team enough. This contest opened the door to my screenwriting future, and I will always be grateful." - Aaron Steven, Action & Thriller Screenplay Contest runner-up

"Winning second place in the Screencraft Horror Competition was a huge boost for our career. The notes we received on Plague Ship were smart and insightful, strengthening the script on a fundamental level. On the heels of the contest, Ben Powell and I were signed by Andrew Wilson at Zero Gravity Management and Plague Ship spent the holidays in front of some of the hottest genre directors working today. The exposure we received led to some great press, meetings with producers and development executives, and pitches on a number of writing assignments." - Alex Greenfield (and Ben Powell), Horror Contest runners-up

"For me my professional screenwriting career started with the Screencraft contest. It was a quarter final placement in the Family Friendly Contest for me and what I came out of this with was honest, encouraging, constructive feedback so I knew what I needed to do to improve. A year later and also utilizing the Screencraft Consultancy Services I was a finalist in the ScreenCraft Fellowship competition. As a direct result of this and alongside a fantastic referral from Screencraft again I signed with a Hollywood lit manager. So for me it all started with the Screencraft contest. It was the first time I'd allowed my writing to be fairly and objectively judged and it allowed me to grow as a writer. I wouldn't be where I am now without it! I can only recommend any writer looking for a contest that is well judged and can actually help your career to use Screencraft! Thanks again!" - Thomas Grigg, ScreenCraft Fellowship finalist

"The ScreenCraft Fellowship was a pivotal moment in my career as a writer. John and Cam made every effort to not only connect me with industry members, but to make sure that I received representation. It's hard to imagine being nearly as confident in the future of my writing without the fellowship. I can't thank ScreenCraft enough and I encourage any writer seeking reps to apply." - Mark J. Stasenko Jr., ScreenCraft Fellowship winner
